What is XRP?

XRP is the native asset of the XRP Ledger, a payment-focused blockchain. Instead of mining or staking, the ledger reaches agreement through a consensus process among validators, and a new ledger closes every few seconds.

All 100 billion XRP were created at launch. None are mined, and each transaction destroys a small fee, so the total supply can only shrink. A large share was placed in escrow by Ripple, the company most associated with XRP, and is released on a schedule; the circulating supply is therefore well below the total.

How to buy XRP, step by step

1. Pick an exchange. Every exchange we track lists XRP. Compare fees, funding options and whether it serves your country in our exchange reviews.
2. Create and verify your account. Regulated exchanges ask for identity documents before you can deposit fiat.
3. Fund the account. A bank transfer or a stablecoin deposit usually costs far less than a card payment.
4. Buy XRP. Use the XRP/USDT or XRP/USD market, and check the cheapest venue in the table above first.
5. Decide where to keep it. On the exchange is simplest, but the exchange then holds your coins. An XRP wallet you control needs a small minimum balance, called the reserve, and when you send XRP to an exchange you must include its destination tag. Forgetting the tag is the most common way XRP deposits go missing.

Why the XRP price differs between exchanges

In our minute-by-minute measurement the gap between the highest and lowest venue averaged about 0.05 percent. Bitcoin averaged about 0.025 percent. XRP’s gap also spikes more often: above half a percent in about six minutes per thousand, against one in ten thousand for Bitcoin, with a widest measured gap of about 1.8 percent.

What moves the XRP price

The wider crypto market first. In our hourly composite, XRP moved with Bitcoin at a correlation of about 0.78, where 1 would mean identical moves, and its moves were about twice the size of Bitcoin’s.

XRP-specific news, such as regulatory decisions or escrow releases, moves it on top of that, and so does leverage. The funding rates on this page show whether traders are paying to be long or short right now.
